Institute for Stored Product Protection

The drugstore beetle, here on oat flakes, is one of the most common household and storage pests. The larvae cause damage both through feeding and by contamination of foodstuffs with frass, faeces, and webbings.

Tasks and Fields of Work

According to the German Plant Protection Act, stored products are plants or parts of plants which have not, or only slightly, been processed, such as by drying, pressing, or milling. Stored products may be infested and spoiled by pests.

The Institute for Stored Product Protection develops methods to protect stored goods against noxious insects such as beetles, moths or dust lice as well as mites. These methods must not damage the product, consumers' health or the environment.

Apart from developing new protective agents and methods, the institute is involved in the testing for authorization of chemical substances for stored product protection.

The tasks of the institute also include advising Germany's Federal Ministry for Consumer Protection, Food and Agriculture, authorities of the federal states, as well as other organizations and private industry on all questions of stored product protection.

Main Fields of Work

The main fields of work of the Institute for Stored Product Protection are:
  • Biology of storage pests (taxonomy, ecology, behaviour, physiology, tolerance, and resistance against chemical compounds, population dynamics)
  • Precautionary measures against pest infestation (storage techniques, hygiene, packaging)
  • Early recognition of pests (traps baited with pheromones or chemical attractants, light traps, acoustic detection)
  • Control methods (chemical, physical, biological and bio-technical control methods, new application techiques)
